Spring is in full swing across Surrey, and with warmer weather, longer days, and gardens bursting
back to life, now is the ideal time to give your trees some much-needed attention.
At Beechwood Tree Services, we’ve been busy across the county – from leafy lanes in Guildford to suburban gardens in Dorking – helping homeowners and landowners get their trees in great shape for the season ahead. But why is May such an important month for tree maintenance? Let us explain.
After the dormancy of winter, most trees are now in their active growth phase. This means it’s easier to spot dead or damaged branches, assess their overall health, and guide their growth with careful pruning. Whether it’s reducing a fast-growing eucalyptus or shaping an ornamental cherry, pruning at the right time encourages strong, healthy growth without shocking the tree.
As the sun comes out, so do the garden chairs and barbecues. Overgrown branches hanging over patios or neighbours’ fences can quickly become a nuisance – not to mention a safety risk. We’ve recently helped several Surrey residents by reducing overhang on trees like maples, oaks, and laurels, creating more space and light while keeping things safe and tidy.
May is also peak nesting season, which is why we take extra care during this time of year. Before any work begins, our team constantly checks for active bird nests and ensures our operations comply with the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. If nesting is spotted, we’ll advise on the best course of action and schedule work for a later date if needed.
4. Tidy Up Before Summer Growth Explodes
Trees and hedges can become unruly quickly as temperatures rise. Tackling them in May means you’re a step ahead, making summer maintenance much easier and giving your outdoor spaces a clean, managed look going into the warmer months.
